Cream shortening and slowly add sugar and 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
Add egg yolks and water and vanilla.
Blend thoroughly. Mix flour, salt, baking powder, and soda together and add to shortening mixture.
Spread evenly in 12 x 16-inch pan.
Sprinkle with chocolate bits.
Beat egg whites until stiff.
Add remaining brown sugar and continue to beat stiff.
Spread smoothly on top of chocolate bits.
Bake at 350Β° for 30 minutes.
Cut into squares.
Remove from pan and leave uncovered to air overnight.
