Make syrup of sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg; add butter. Quarter, peel and core apples.

Sift flour, salt and baking powder, then cut in shortening.

Add milk all at once and stir until flour is moistened.

Roll 1/4-inch thick; cut in 5-inch squares.

Put 4 pieces of apples on each.

Sprinkle generously with additional sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Dot with butter and fold corners to center.

Pinch edges together and place 1 inch apart in greased baking dish or pan.

Pour syrup over dumplings and bake in moderate oven at 375Β° for 35 minutes.

Serve hot with cream.
