Apple Bars
Apple Bars is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 1/2 c. flour (plain), 1 c. shortening, 1 c. sugar, 1 tsp. salt and 1 egg, separated, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. An easy weeknight meal that comes together quickly.

Combine flour, shortening, 2 tablespoons sugar and salt.
Mix as for pie crust.
Pour egg yolk into cup; add enough milk to make 2/3 cup liquid.
Stir the milk mixture into dough.
Roll out half the dough; set on a large cookie sheet.
Sprinkle cornflakes over dough.
Place apples over cornflakes.
Mix 1 cup sugar and cinnamon.
Sprinkle over apples.
(Butter over the top of the apples, optional.) Roll out remaining dough.
Place over apples for top crust.
Pinch edges together firmly.
Beat egg white until stiff; brush over top crust.
Bake at 350Β° for 1 hour. Combine powdered sugar and enough water to make of spreading consistency; spread evenly over hot pastry.
Yields 24 servings.
