American Beauty Cake
American Beauty Cake is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 oz. red food coloring, 2 tbsp. cocoa, 1/2 c. shortening, 1 1/2 c. sugar and 2 eggs, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A classic recipe that has been enjoyed for generations.

Combine food coloring and cocoa.
Let stand.
Cream the shortening and gradually beat in sugar; add eggs and color mixture. Beat well.
Add buttermilk alternately with salt and flour mixture; beat well.
Beat in vanilla.
Remove from mixer and sprinkle baking soda over batter.
Pour vinegar over soda and stir in thoroughly. Bake in 2 greased and floured 8-inch pans at 350Β° for 30 to 35 minutes.
Do not overbake!
Cut each layer in half (4 layers) and ice.
