❓ Frequently asked questions

What is Smiling Pages?

Smiling Pages is a recipe app for iPhone and iPad, and the companion to smilingpages.com. You can search a large catalogue of recipes, filter by diet, save recipes to your cookbook, cook step by step in Cooking Mode with timers and optional voice commands, plan meals, build a shopping list, and keep track of your pantry.

Is it free?

Yes. The app is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no ads.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up or login. Just open the app and start cooking.

Does it work offline?

Yes, for the recipes you have saved. Your cookbook, shopping list, meal plan and pantry are stored on your device, so you can open saved recipes and cook from them without an internet connection. Searching the catalogue, loading new recipes, barcode lookups and rating a recipe need a connection.

How do I delete my data?

Everything the app stores about you — your cookbook, shopping list, meal plan, pantry, preferences and cached recipes — lives only on your device. You can remove individual items inside the app, or delete all of it by deleting the app (touch and hold the app icon, then tap Remove App → Delete App). We don’t hold a copy. Recipe ratings you submitted are anonymous, so they can’t be traced back to you or deleted individually. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Why is the app rated 13+?

The recipe catalogue includes cocktails and other drinks that contain alcohol.

A scanned barcode wasn’t recognised. Why?

Product names come from Open Food Facts, a free, community-built food database. If a product isn’t in their database yet, you can add the item to your pantry by typing its name.

🔑 Why does the app ask for permissions?

iOS asks for your permission the first time a feature needs it. If you tap Don’t Allow, only that feature is turned off — everything else keeps working. You can change your choice at any time in the iOS Settings app under Smiling Pages.

PermissionWhat it’s used for
Camera Scanning barcodes and taking photos to identify pantry items, or to read a recipe page. Images are processed on your device and never uploaded.
Photo picker Existing photos are chosen with the system photo picker; no photo-library permission is requested. Processed on your device.
Microphone and Speech Recognition Optional hands-free voice commands in Cooking Mode, such as “next step”. Speech is recognised on your device.
Calendars (add events only) Adding a planned meal to your calendar when you tap to add it. The app can’t read your calendar.
Notifications Cooking-timer alerts and pantry expiry reminders, scheduled on your device.

🚩 Report a problem with a recipe

Spotted a mistake, a missing step, a wrong ingredient amount, a food-safety concern, or content you believe infringes your rights? Please email support@smilingpages.com and include:

  1. The recipe name, or its link (in the app, use the share button on the recipe and copy the link).
  2. What’s wrong, and what you think it should say.
  3. For a copyright concern, where the original content appears and how you are connected to it.

We review every report and correct or remove recipes as needed.
