Grease a 2-quart round casserole.

In a medium bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda. Stir in walnuts.

With a fork blend in buttermilk, butter and onion until moist.

Turn onto lightly floured surface.

Knead 2 to 3 minutes, until dough forms a ball, adding more flour if necessary.

Dough will be slightly sticky.

Place in a casserole; score top with an "X".

Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Remove from casserole and cool on a wire rack.
