Upside-Down Cherry Pudding

Cream butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a 1 1/2-quart casserole or baking dish.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
Add alternately with milk to creamed mixture.
Stir well.
Drain cherries; add enough hot water to juice to make 1 1/2 cups liquid. Add extract.
Mix cornstarch with remaining sugar.
Add to liquid.
Bring to boil, stirring constantly.
Pour hot juice over batter; spread cherries on top.
Do not stir.
Bake at 350Β° for 40 to 45 minutes.
Serve warm with cream, whipped cream or ice cream.
