Cook squash in small amount of water until tender; drain and mash.

Season to taste.

Stir in remaining ingredients, reserving half the cornbread which has been mixed with the butter.

Line a casserole with reserved cornbread.

Set aside enough cornbread to sprinkle on top.

Fill casserole with squash mixture; top with remaining cornbread.

Bake for 30 minutes at 350Β°.

May be prepared the day before and baked when needed.
