Cream shortening, eggs and sugar.
Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; creamed mixture.
Sift salt and flour and add to creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.
Add vanilla, soda and vinegar; blend in.
Bake at 350Β° for 30 minutes in layer pans.
Cool and split layers to ice.
