In small saucepan, combine water and snipped prunes; bring to boil.

Cover and simmer 3 minutes.

Drain reserving 1/3 cup liquid. Set aside.

Cream together sugar and shortening until fluffy; beat in egg.

Combine buttermilk and reserved prune liquid.

Stir together thoroughly all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, salt and baking powder.

Add to creamed mixture alternating with buttermilk mixture.

Fold in cooked prunes.

Bake in two 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 2-inch loaf pans (greased).

Bake at 350Β° about 1 hour. Cool 10 minutes in pans; remove to wire racks.
