Pickled Herring
Pickled Herring is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 4 salt herrings milt (soft white roe), 2 tbsp. oil, 1/2 c. apple cider vinegar, 1/2 c. water and 6 peppercorns, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Bursting with flavor in every bite.
Wash herrings thoroughly and soak in cold water for 12 hours, changing water twice.
Remove the head, tail and entrails; save the milt.
Remove the skin and bones.
Rinse the fillets well and drain.
Cut each fillet into 4 to 5 pieces.
Put the milt through a sieve; combine with oil.
Boil vinegar, water, peppercorns and bay leaves for 10 minutes; cool.
Blend with milt mixture; place in jar.
Cover tightly and let stand for 1 day.
Arrange attractively, garnish with chopped parsley or chives.
