In a large pot with tight lid combine sugar, syrup and water; cover pot and cook on high heat.
Takes 5 minutes to boil.
Place candy thermometer heat 230°; add peanuts or coconut.
Stir with metal spoon.
Boil to 300°; takes about 20 minutes.
Remove from heat; add butter, vanilla and baking soda.
Cool 1 hour. Crack and serve.
