Cook first 4 ingredients to 280Β°.

Sample dropped in water will be hard.

Add 2 cups peanuts; cook about 3 minutes, until light golden brown.

Add soda.

Remove at once from heat; add vanilla and butter as soon as foaming has subsided, pour into greased shallow pan.

When cool, break into pieces.

Foolproof if you use candy thermometer.
