Soak beans 4 hours or overnight.

Discard water.

Dice potatoes (skin on), celery, carrots and onion.

Add ham.

Put in 6-quart pot.

Cover ingredients with water.

Simmer 4 hour.

Remove ham. Remove fat and bone.

Cut ham into bite-size pieces.

Return to soup.

To thin, cook longer.

To thicken, add water.

Serve with toasted bagels.
