Preheat oven to 425Β°. Sift dry ingredients.
Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
Make a well in the middle of the mixture and pour in buttermilk.
Mix just until ingredients are combined and a soft dough is formed.
Do not overmix.
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently until it is soft and elastic (not sticky).
Pat dough out until about 1/2-inch thick.
Cut circles with a cookie cutter or drinking glass.
