Monkey Bread
Monkey Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 c. shortening or lard, 2/3 c. sugar, 2 pkg. dry yeast, 2 eggs, room temperature and melted butter or margarine, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Perfect for family dinners and special occasions.
Combine shortening, boiling water, sugar and salt in a bowl and let cool.
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water; beat eggs and add to yeast mixture.
Add yeast mixture to shortening.
Gradually add flour.
Mix thoroughly; cover and let rise 1 hour.
Knead dough down.
Pinch off chunks and dip into 1 stick melted butter or margarine.
Drop chunks in tube pan.
(Only use 3/4 dough in tube pan; whole recipe makes pan too full.)
If you wish to have a fancy bread, roll chunks in a mixture of cinnamon/sugar before putting into tube pan.
Let rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
Bake at 350Β° for 35 to 40 minutes.
Cool about 5 minutes and turn out onto a plate.
Dribble a glaze of powdered sugar and water over bread.
(I leave the icing off for dinner rolls.)
