Combine first 3 ingredients and beat well, then add dry ingredients which have been sifted together. Scald milk and add butter. Combine the 2 mixtures and beat well.
Pour into square, flat pan and bake in moderate oven at 350Β° for 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven and add frosting, then return to hot oven for frosting to brown.
