Mix hot water and soda.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs then add remaining ingredients except for hot water.
Beat with mixer until smooth.
Slowly add water, beating on low with mixer.
Put into 9 X 13 pan or 3 nine inch layer pans and bake at 350Β° for about 45 minutes.
