Mix soda in buttermilk; for a few minutes. Beat egg whites stiff.
Cream sugar, margarine and shortening; add egg yolks, one at a beating well after each addition; add buttermilk alternately creamed mixture. Stir in vanilla.

Stir in nuts and coconut. Bake in 3 layers for 35 minutes at 325Β°.
