Cream butter and shortening; add sugar and beat until smooth. Add egg yolks and beat well.
Combine flour and soda; add alternately with buttermilk.
Stir in vanilla, coconut and nuts. Fold in egg whites.
Pour batter into 3 greased and floured pans. Bake at 350Β° for 25 minutes.
Cool; frost with cream cheese frosting.
If using self-rising flour, omit soda.
