Pour 1 gallon boiling water over the cucumbers.

Add the salt. Let stand for 1 week, stirring each day.

Drain water off.

Add 1 gallon boiling water and the alum.

Let stand 24 hours.

Drain. Make a syrup of the sugar, vinegar and pickling spices.

Bring to boil; pour over pickles.

Drain and heat syrup for 3 mornings. Next morning

Heat syrup and can or keep in a refrigerator in jar.
