German Crumb Cake
German Crumb Cake is a spiced buttermilk coffee cake with a generous brown-sugar crumb topping. Flour, two sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, shortening, and butter form both the tender base and the sandy crumb layer saved for the top.
Sift the flour, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together.
Rub the Crisco and butter into the dry mixture with your hands until crumbs form.
Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for the top of the cake.
Add the eggs and buttermilk or sour milk to the remaining mixture.
Dissolve the baking soda in the vinegar and stir it into the batter.
Spread the batter in greased and floured pie pans or cake pans.
Sprinkle with the reserved crumbs and bake at 350 F for 30 to 35 minutes.
