Melt chocolate and allow to cool.
Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy; add syrup and continue creaming.
Beat in eggs and chocolate.
Sift flour; sift together dry ingredients.
Into batter.
Fold in chocolate pieces and walnuts.
Spread a greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan; bake in a moderate oven about 25 minutes.
Cut in bars when cool.
