Place cocoa and baking soda in separate cups and mix each with a little hot water.
In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening and eggs.
Mix well. Add buttermilk, cocoa and baking soda mixture.

Mix in flour until smooth. Bake at 350Β° for 30 to 35 minutes.
