Cut dates in pieces.

Put in bowl with 1 cup boiling water. Sprinkle soda over.

Let cool, then add sugar, shortening, sugar and egg.

Add date mixture.

Stir in flour and salt.

Fold in nuts. Bake 1 hour in a slow oven, about 325° to 350°.

Makes about 2 small loaves or 1 large loaf.

Can use raisins in place of dates.
