Danish Apple Squares
Danish Apple Squares is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 3/4 c. flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1 c. shortening, plus 2 tbsp., 1 egg yolk, beaten and milk (add enough to egg to make 2/3 c.), this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Simple to make and full of bold, satisfying flavors.
Sift together flour and salt.
Cut in shortening until crumbly.
Add egg and milk mixture and blend.
Divide dough into 2 parts.
Roll half of the dough to fit 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1-inch jelly roll pan or an oblong baking pan.
Sprinkle bottom of crust of dough with corn flakes.
Combine apples, sugar and cinnamon. Spread mixture over corn flakes and put on top.
Pinch together to seal edges.
Beat egg white stiff and brush over top crust.
Bake in 400° or 375° oven for 50 minutes or until golden.
Drizzle confectioners sugar over the cooked crust (1 cup confectioners sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1 to 2 tablespoons water).
