Mix brown sugar, flour, shortening and salt. Knead as a pie crust. Save 1/2 cup crumbs for top of cake.
Add sour milk, soda, egg and vanilla. Blend well. Bake in an 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan at 350Β° for 45 minutes.
