Preheat oven to 400Β°: spray 8 inch square, 7x11, or 12 cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and the salt.
In a small bowl, beat the buttermilk over the flour mixture; stir just until blended (do not overmix).
Transfer to the pan.
Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 20-25 minutes.
