Soften yeast in warm water.
Combine in a large bowl, sugar, salt, butter and milk.
Cool to lukewarm.
Stir in egg and yeast. Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough.
Knead on a floured surface until smooth and satiny, about 5 minutes.
Place in a greased bowl, covered.
Let rise until light and doubled, 1 to 2 hours.
