Mix raisins, dates, soda and water; let cool.
Cream sugar, shortening and eggs.
Add vanilla, flour and salt.
Blend and add pecans.
Bake in 3 (1 pound) coffee cans or 6 (16 ounce) cans (sprayed with Pam) for 1 hour at 350Β°.
Freezes nicely.
