In a large heavy saucepan, put the sugar and evaporated milk. Bring slowly to a rolling boil.

Let boil for no longer than 8 minutes, stirring constantly, to keep from scorching.

Remove from heat and add the marshmallows, chocolate chips and butter or margarine. Stir until melted and well blended.

Add broken nutmeats and vanilla. Spread in large ungreased (at least 9 x 13-inches) pan.

When cool, cut into squares.
