Cream shortening and butter sugar.
Add egg and molasses; beat well.
Sift together dry ingredients and stir in.
Add the hot water last; mix a very fluid batter. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan and bake in a 350Β° oven for minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.
Cut in squares and serve with whipped cream or nutmeg sauce.
Makes 18 to 20 servings.
