In saucepan, combine sugar, flour and salt; gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until bubbly, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir a moderate amount of hot mixture into egg yolks; mix immediately and return to hot mixture.

Cook about another 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla.
