Grease and flour 2 (8-inch) layer pans.

Start oven 10 minutes before baking at 350Β°.

Sift flour and measure; resift 4 times with soda and salt.

With silver fork, quickly crush bananas to fine paste.

Add lemon juice and stir in buttermilk.

Cream shortening with wooden spoon; add sugar gradually and cream thoroughly.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Stir in vanilla.

Add dry ingredients alternately with banana mixture in 3 or 4 portions, beginning and ending with flour, and beating well after each addition.

Fold in nuts.
