Cream together sugar, shortening and applesauce.
Mix well. Sift together flour and soda; add cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Slowly mix flour mixture into wet ingredients until well blended. Pour into 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan that is greased and floured at 350Β° for 25 to 30 minutes.
