Apple Bars
Apple Bars is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1/2 c. flour, 1 tbsp. sugar, 1 tsp. salt, 1 c. shortening and 1 egg yolk plus enough milk to make 2/3 c., this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A comforting dish that warms the soul.
Mix first 4 ingredients like pie crust.
Beat egg yolk in measuring cup; add enough milk to make 2/3 cup.
Add to crust mixture.
Roll out 1/2 of crust to fit large cookie sheet.
Put crushed cornflakes over it.
Fill with sliced apples.
Sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon over the apples.
Roll out the other 1/2 of the crust.
Put over the top and pinch edges together.
Beat egg whites until stiff.
Spread over top of crust.
Do not add sugar to egg whites.
Bake in 400Β° oven for 1 hour.
Remove from oven and pour following glaze while hot.
