Combine yeast and warm water.

Let stand 5 minutes or until bubbly.

Add buttermilk to yeast mixture and set aside.

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add buttermilk mixture and mix until all ingredients are moistened.

Turn dough out on floured board and knead 3 or 4 times.

Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a 2-inch cutter.

Place on lightly greased pans.

Bake at 400Β° for 10 to 12 minutes.

Makes 3 dozen.
