Add dates and soda to boiling water; cool.
Mix together the sugar, shortening, eggs, flour and soda.
Add cooled date mixture to sugar, shortening, eggs, flour and soda.
Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
Top with nuts, chocolate chips and brown sugar. Bake 1/2 hour at 350Β°.
