German Apple Cake
German Apple Cake is a moist square snack cake packed with diced apples, walnuts, raisins, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It is mixed by hand, bakes in a small pan, and needs only a light dusting of sugar to feel like a cozy fall dessert.
Cream the shortening with the white sugar and brown sugar in a large bowl.
Beat in the egg until the mixture is combined.
Add the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
Fold in the diced apples, walnuts, and raisins by hand; the batter will be thick.
Spread the batter in a greased 8 x 8-inch pan.
Bake at 350 F for about 40 minutes, until the center tests done.
Cool before cutting into squares.
