Study Abroad Academic Advisement

TO THE STUDENT - Students participating in TSU Study Abroad programs are required to meet with an academic advisor to discuss courses to be completed on their chosen program. The Academic Advisement form serves as a tentative approval for your plan of study. If information on specific courses is unavailable, general topics and levels of study should be listed. If possible, students should include more courses than they plan to take as some courses may be unavailable by the start of the program. The Academic Advisement Form does NOT constitute a pre-approval of courses. Coursework completed abroad must be evaluated by the academic units granting equivalent credit at TSU upon the student's return to campus.

It is your responsibility to follow through with the program at your exchange site. Occasionally, situations beyond your control will prevent you from being able to take certain specific courses. In those cases, you should take courses that are similar to those listed on the advisement and advise the academic advisor at TSU of the substitutions you have made with a copy of courses taken as soon as possible.

Approval of study abroad coursework must be determined when you return. Students are required to submit syllabi, papers and notes to be evaluated by faculty in the departments that grant credit similar to that of the course taken abroad.

TO THE ACADEMIC ADVISOR - The student presenting the advisement form is participating in a TSU study abroad program. The student should provide you with a description of the courses he/she plans to take on the program as well as information about the program. Please note that in some cases, the student may have access to course descriptions and even course syllabi for the chosen program. However, in many university systems, course descriptions and catalogs are unavailable. Students are placed in courses following face-to-face discussions with tutors or advisors. In such cases, this advisement form may contain only very general statements such as “upper-level course work in (name of subject) not to duplicate any course previously taken at TSU University.”

Please try to indicate for the student, to the best of your ability, how credit should be awarded for these courses. Your determination is not binding but is meant to guide the student in his/her course of study. Please note that credit equivalencies are ultimately determined in the department where similar courses are offered at TSU. Your determination on this form is meant to serve as a guide for the student. This form is NOT meant as a pre-approval. Approval of course equivalencies and degree credit is determined upon a review of materials once the student has completed the study abroad program.

TSU REGISTRATION FOR STUDY ABROAD - The Office of International Education is responsible for the registration of all TSU students attending TSU study abroad programs. Students are placed in one of two types of registration dependent on the type of program they are participating in. The distinction between types of registration is:

A. RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMS - Reciprocal programs require that a student pay tuition and fees at TSU. Typical enrollments for undergraduates are 12 semester hours for Fall and Spring and 6 semester hours per summer session. Graduate enrollment is typically 9 semester hours for Fall and Spring and 6 semester hours for a summer session. For more information click here.

B. AFFILIATED STUDIES PROGRAMS - Students participating in Affiliated programs pay tuition and fees to some other institution or group (not TSU), but carry a non-tuition bearing registration at TSU. The non-tuition bearing registration maintains the student's eligibility for TSU financial aid, scholarships and ensures continuous enrollment at TSU during the study abroad period.
